Vision system with OpenCV and an ABB robot to recognize, locate and handle numbered pucks.

Purpose

The goal was to build a complete system in which a robotic arm with a camera could recognize and handle numbered pucks. The camera had to identify both each puck’s number and its position, and work with the robot’s control program to pick and place the correct object.

Solution

A camera was mounted directly on an ABB robot and used to identify pucks through contour-based image processing. The system used OpenCV and contour detection to interpret number and position. The robot was programmed in RAPID using RobotStudio, and the camera analysis was integrated into the control flow.

Result

The system achieved 100% accuracy within the project’s controlled conditions and ran reliably. The main limitation was the robot’s physical speed, not the image analysis.
